My experience at the event:

It's easy to compare how fit you are in a particular moment of the season: just check the timing for the same race year after year. In 2010 I completed the Spirit of Flight (a nice 10km race in a AirForce base, where you basically run a loop in the aiport surrounded by old military planes!) in 46:51, and I was quite happy with the result.  In 2011, after coming out from a winter where I manage to lose kilos thanks to a strict diet, I completed the same race in 43:54, in what is still today my best 10km ever.

This time I complete the race below the 45 minutes mark. I compared it to last year's result and I was a bit disappointed (but I'm carrying around 4 kg more!). The disappointment didn't last long when, once home, I realized that this was my 2nd best result on the 10km ever! ANd only the 3rd time in 34 attempts when I went under the 45 minutes mark. Not bad!
