My experience at the event:
If there is a race I always look forward too, it's definitely the Midmar Mile in Howick. Even if I know that I'm a shit swimmer (I learnt to swim like 7 years ago really...), I love to take Lindsey and my kids (yes, I have 2 now! After Finn, born in 2016, we got another boy in December 2019, Avery) to Howick, which is definitely one of my favourite destinations in South Africa. Probably it helps that we get free accommodation at Shari's house...
This year I swam on Sunday, since I didn't have a Comrade badge for a Saturday early swim. It actually worked out very well, since the weather the day before was horrific, with races postponed until after the storms played out.
On Sunday the weather was terrific, and with on a flat day (the waves started crashing in only in the latter races), I managed to complete the mile in around 50 minutes, which was much better than last year (by almost 10 minutes) and a little worse than my best time (in 2015, when I was younger and fitter...).
Overall it was another great experience, and even the long drive with the kids (7 hours due to numerous stops) was almost a breeze.
